No one has time for yet another holiday activity, but this one will improve your health and well-being during the stressful holiday season. Take a few moments out of your busy holiday schedule to practice the Japanese tradition of Shinrin-yoku, "Forest-bathing" or taking in the atmosphere of the forest.
Shinrin-yoku is simply taking a short, relaxing walk through a forested area, and taking in the fresh air, sights and sounds of the peaceful setting. A recent study found that walking in a forest has significantly more impact in reducing the stress hormone cortisol, heart rate and blood pressure than walking on an indoor treadmill. Researchers in Japan have also shown that breathing in plant aromatic chemicals in a forest actually boosts the immune system, a wonderful benefit during cold and flu season.
While the Interpretive Center will be closed on December 24, 25 & 31 and January 1, the trails and preserve remain open through the holidays, here for all your forest therapy needs! Stop by and let the crisp air clear your head!
