· It’s an ideal setting to stay in shape by way of
walking, snowshoeing, skiing or sledding.
· There are no mosquitoes!
· With little foliage and possible snow on the
ground it is easy to spot birds and other animals, and their tracks in the snow.
· It is a great time to try out the new winter gear
and clothing you may have gotten over the holiday.
· It relieves stress and contributes to an overall
sense of well being. In other words, it combats the winter blahs!
Here are some fun ideas on how to spend that time
outdoors:
Hike the trails!
There are 2 ½ miles of walking trails within the Lyman Woods preserve.
In addition, many of the parks in Downers Grove have trails with scenic views.
Snowshoe!
If you do not have your own
snowshoes, rent them at Lyman Woods! Rentals are available during regular
Interpretive Center hours. Guided Snowshoe Hikes are offered on select
Saturdays to those who rent snowshoes.
Geocache!
There are two geocaches and one letterbox within the Lyman Woods
Preserve. New to geocaching or looking for a guided trek? Sign up for our
Winter Geocaching program for families!
Take a class!
There are a variety of nature classes for all ages available to take in
the winter at Lyman Woods. Most include an outdoor portion and hike.
Whatever your holiday plans, be sure to take a break from the hectic season to include some much needed outdoor time with your loved ones (or seek the peace and quiet of nature on your own!).
