No one likes
to give up a good secret, but this one is too good not to share…
The best time to visit Lyman Woods in
the winter is after a fresh snowfall. It is even more ideal if the snow lasts
throughout the night and early morning, stopping right at daybreak. These are
the perfect circumstances to view animal tracks in the snow. The photos seen
here were taken before 8 AM. The tracks were gone just
hours later due to sun, wind, and boots. If you can’t make it out early, you
might miss these completely. So much for sleeping-in…
Obviously,
fresh snow allows us to snowshoe, cross-country ski, and do many other
activities, but it also allows us to understand the animal species
that inhabit the woods and live in close proximity to the Interpretive Center. Sure, some
animals hibernate, become dormant, or migrate from the area
entirely, but others adapt to the harsh conditions and survive. These animals
are often the most overlooked and underrated.
We hope you
all have an opportunity to view tracks here in the winter after another
snow….but we wouldn’t be upset if spring was here soon too.
