Backyard Gardening

Spring is finally on its way, so it’s time to start your garden! Don’t have a lot of space? Start with a small bed or garden in containers. There are so many benefits to gardening, including environmental benefits. Growing your own food reduces the resources used to produce and transport food…think water, pesticides, fertilizers, shipping, refrigeration, packaging and so on. Organic practices increase the environmental benefits of backyard gardening.

In addition to environmental benefits, you will benefit as well!

·         Food Safety: When you grow your own food, you know it is safe to eat and not contaminated with chemicals or bacteria.

·         Better Nutrition: Typically people who grow vegetables eat more vegetables…that includes kids!

·         Get Fit: Gardeners benefit from exercise and time spent outdoors. Hello Vitamin D!

·         Save Green: Supplementing your groceries with homegrown produce will save you money on your grocery bill.

And is there anything better than a homegrown ripe sun-warmed tomato?! Check back next week for our tips on gardening with kids.
